__________
The kids are alright
I was asked to go into a failing recovering primary school in Bristol to take pictures of the students learning and having fun for a piece on primary school league tables.
I am quite used to being able to orchestrate at least a little bit of what is going on in front of my Camera. However directing doesn't work so well in a class of 30 primary school children, nobody listened to anything I said, the kids either tried grabbing my camera, pulling faces at me or climbing my lightstands. I was there for the long slog.
It took about an hour for the children to become bored by me, which is longer than most people take. Once they've lost interest it's reasonably easy to photograph children as long as they're happy. I usually pick a cute one, pull up a chair and wait for the lively expressions.
